Laptop wifi problem
I have just bought a hp laptop, windows 10, and unless I'm sitting no more than 2 meters from my wifi router the signal drops out, and even then it's not great, the router is in my front room and even if I'm in the same room it drops out, tried all the troubleshooting ideas but still no joy, the broadband sign on the toolbar has a white star above it and when I try and connect it says unable to connect to this network, all other wifi devices work fine around the house so can't understand why this is happening, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

P.S of course I've tried wiping my knob all over it, I've even had a wizz over the disk drive but still no joy.

"Almost certainly", I'll give you that.

Give me a call when something stretches your MSCE/CCIE tickets a bit too far.

Oxsaw, if you had read the post below yours, he ran the network troubleshooter more than once, if there was an IP address conflict, that would almost certainly have picked it up

Re: Laptop wifi problem
When searching for WiFi, can you defect any other ssid?
Try another unsecured network (neighbours, cafe etc)
If still weak signal the antenna connection is lost.

Thanks for the replies, to be honest I have no idea about computers so a lot of the answers have gone a little over my head. Gonna take it back and hope the new one works.

Download a utility that checks wifi channels in use

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wifi_information_view.html

Then choose a channel that ain't used by anyone else and go at least one channel away from all if you can.

Have you checked to see if any rodents have got inside?

Re: Laptop wifi problem
Could be an IP address conflict. Make sure none of the devices on your router have the same address/are set to manual/static IP address.

Also change the password on your router - somebody may have cracked it and broken in.

Tried the troubleshooting a few times today but no joy.

Re: Laptop wifi problem
Probably won't fix the problem, but right click on the connection (broadband sign) in the taskbar and then select troubleshoot problems, I've had a few issues sorted by doing that.

Yeah it's brand new, guess I'll have to take it back. Typical.

Had similar on an out of warranty laptop, did as the cat mentions and bought a USB adaptor and now works a treat, but if its new take it back.

Sounds like the Wifi card is knackered.
If it is new, take it back. If second hand get a usb wifi dongle.

The Titanic had a white star on it and that didn't stay up for long, either.
